Peacock Newnam & WhiteIn mid August of 1985, at the urging of many friends and neighbors, A.D. Peacock and Bill Newnam opened the Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home at 1411 North Howe Street in Southport, N.C.  This brought over 75 years of funeral service experience to the community.  Mr. Peacock was president and sole owner and Mr. Newnam was vice-president and general manager.  On January 1, 1987, due to poor health, Mr. Peacock sold the the funeral home to Bill and Kathy Newnam.

Long time Southport residents often called the Howe Street facility the “Old Finch House”, referring to a family who resided in the house in the 1930′s.  The original part of the funeral home was built around 1900 and prior to being converted into a funeral home had housed many local families and had even served as the office for a local physician.
In 1993, additions and improvements to the original structure were added.  These improvements consisted of paving the parking lot front and back for 75 cars, handicap ramp, handicap rest rooms, large reception hallway and chapel with seating for 180 people complete with private family room.  At this time the original portion of the building was also completely remodeled.  Extensive landscaping was done at this time.  These renovations earned Peacock-Newnam the Appearance Award at the annual Brunswick County Small Business Awards dinner in 1994.  Dedication services for the chapel were held November 7, 1993.
Surrounded by dedicated and competent employees, Kathy and Bill Newnam continued to operate and oversee the growth of the funeral home until November 8, 2005.  At that time the funeral home was sold to Greg and Delores White and the name of the firm became Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service.  Following the smooth transition of ownership, although retired, the Newnams are proud to remain affiliated with the firm.
