Donald Schmitt

Donald Schmitt

Donald Schmitt of St. James passed away Friday, December 12, at New Hanover Medical Center.

Don was born in Baltimore and lived in Reston, Virginia before moving to St. James in 2008. He leaves Chris, his devoted wife of 43 years, and sons Todd and Scott, who live in Northern Virginia. Their extended family includes Dani and Trina and Don’s “Grand-dogs” Chaos and Tucker.

Don loved God, his family, and his country. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served as the bell ringer for the 8:00 service, where he occupied the back pew every Sunday. Don always looked forward to visits by “my Boys”. He served in the U.S. Army and Virginia National Guard from 1960 to 1966. Don was a strong patriot and revered the United States flag. He scrupulously followed the rules for displaying and caring for his American flag.

He had a long and varied business career. In his most noteworthy achievement, his company developed and installed the technology and equipment to broadcast television from the floor of the US Senate.

Don enjoyed living at St. James and was an avid golfer. He joined several golf groups and the MGA. He was also a car nut–an old hot-rodder, in his words–and could often be seen driving his red Corvette convertible through St. James. A wide-brim hat covered his signature flattop. He always kept the car, as well as his garage where it was parked, immaculate.

The family wishes that contributions be made to The First Tee of Brunswick County (http://www.thefirstteebrunswickcounty.org) or to Paws Place (http://www.pawsplace.org).

A celebration of life service will be held on January 24th at 11:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, NC.
