Arthur Eugene Barber, 82, passed peacefully at home Thursday, August 28, 2014.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 50 years, Patricia Geddie Barber; a son, Wilbert Eugene Barber (Julie); and a daughter, Mary Louise Barber.  He was blessed with four grandchildren (Alec, Alana, Kathryn& Lauren) and a granddog, Marlin.  He was a Godly man and relished in the simple things.

A memorial service will be 2pm Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel in Southport.

The family will receive friends and family from 1-2 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Liberty Hospice or First Baptist Church of Oak Island, NC.

Velma Ruth Justice, 88 of Bolivia, passed away on August 29, 2014 at Ocean Trail Nursing Center in Southport.

Mrs. Justice was born September 6, 1925 in West Virginia. Survivors include two sons and two daughters.

James Warren obit picJames Melton Warren, Jr., 55, of Oak Island passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Warren was born in Dunn, North Carolina on September 23, 1958, son of Varie Lee Warren and the late James Melton Warren, Sr. Mr. Warren was a retired firefighter from Yaupon Beach Volunteer Fire Department where he had served for 39 years and had formerly served as chief. He also served as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s officer for 19 years, was a member of Oak Island Moose Lodge, and was an avid poker player. Mr. Warren was co-owner and operator with his brother Mark Warren of Warren Brothers Auto Services.

Survivors include his mother Varie Warren; one brother, Mark Warren; three daughters, Heather, Meredith, and Elizabeth Warren; and her two sons, Gage and Gavin Sessoms all of Oak Island.

Funeral services will be 11am Saturday, August 23, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Oak Island with Reverend Charlie Carter officiating. Burial will be at 4pm at Banners Chapel Advent Christian Church Cemetery in Benson, NC.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday, August 22, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Oak Island.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the James Warren Memorial Fund, 408 Trott Street, Oak Island, NC 28465.

The daughters would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Tom Holland for providing extraordinary care and guidance through their dad’s courageous battle.

Edward William L. Ledford went home to be with his Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, on August 20, 2014. He was a faithful servant of God who was concerned for the souls of others.

Born in Waynesville, North Carolina on January 9, 1926, he was the son of the late Delmar E. and Blonnie Ledford. Ed was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II and was a retired lineman. Mr. Ledford was also preceded in death by his brother Lloyd D. Ledford and sister Florence Anthony.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara and step-children Billy, Anthony, and Mickey Simms, and Debbie Spinks; a very special niece Debbie Cunningham, niece Becky Farless, and nephew George Anthony.

Mr. Ledford will be remembered by many in the Southport area as “the man who wore an oxygen tank and gave out gospel tracts in Walmart, outside Food Lion, and Lowes Foods.”

Funeral services will be 3pm Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Sonrise Independent Baptist Church. Interment will be 1pm Monday, August 25, 2014 in Salisbury National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-3pm at the church.

Evelyn Lee Lewis McKeithan, 95, of Oak Island passed away on August 16, 2014 in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick.

Mrs. McKeithan was born August 31, 1918 in New Hanover County to the late William and Lenora Lewis. She was a long time resident of Bolivia and had lived on Oak Island for the last 15 years. Mrs. McKeithan was a retired rural letter carrier for the US Postal service having begun delivering during WWII. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Kenneth McKeithan and a grandson, Michael Corey McKeithan.

Surviving are her three sons Robert Kenneth “Bob” McKeithan, Jr. of Oak Island, William Patrick McKeithan and wife Marie of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Timothy Wayne “Tim” McKeithan of Monrovia, California; a daughter M. Lee Seaton of Eugene, Oregon; seven grandchildren, Robin McKeithan Furnier and husband Brent, Suzanne Flegel, Kathleen Seaton, David Seaton, Christopher McKeithan, Jennifer Furlow, and Keano McKeithan; four great grandchildren, Robert Tyler Furnier, Thomas Austin Furnier, Felicia Rose Furnier, and Wyatt Furnier; and one great-great grandson, Cole Cameron Furnier.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bolivia.

Donald Francis Spriet, 89 of Southport, passed away on August 15, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center. Mr. Spriet was born March 25, 1925 in Elgin, Illinois the son of the late Charles and Sarah Spriet. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corp having served as a pilot in WWII. Mr. Spriet retired from Unisys Corporation New York City 27 years ago. He and his late wife Anne then moved to Moosehead Lake, Maine for the next 22 years, and finally three years ago they moved to Southport where Anne passed away two years ago.

Surviving is three sons Dennis Spriet, Paul Spriet, and David Spriet (Karen) all of New Jersey; two daughters Kathy Caruso and husband Rich of Southport, and Karen Rothenheber (Phil) of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren Brian Caruso and wife Nicole, Michael Caruso and wife Jami, Scott Caruso and wife Ashley, Karin Goude and husband Ryan, Eric Rothenheber, Lisa Ford, Laura Conner and husband Chuck, and Brianna Spriet; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 22, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel with Reverend Homer Murdock officiating.

Robert Johnson Covington, 84 of Oak Island passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Covington was born June 1, 1930 in Reidsville, NC. He was a member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church and had retired to Oak Island 14 years ago from Durham. Mr. Covington was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean Conflict and was a graduate of Western Carolina University. He was preceded in death by his father James Daniel Covington; his mother and step-father Madge and Wade Carpenter; a son Shannon Covington; a brother and a sister.

Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Frances Covington; a daughter Kim Covington Yontosh and husband George of Raleigh; a grandson Scott Duncan and wife Angela of Cary; two great-grandsons Tyler and Jaxson Duncan; two nieces and one nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Oak Island Presbyterian Church with Reverend Walter Taylor officiating.

Terry Lee Dayton

Terry Lee Dayton age 68 of Boiling Spring Lakes passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Newark, Ohio on May 15, 1946; the son of the late, Willis Warner Dayton and Lula Marie Toothman Dayton; preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Gary Dayton. Mr. Dayton was a graduate Frazeysburg High School in 1964 Frazeysburg, Ohio. After finishing high school he entered the United States Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam Conflict. He received several medals and accomplishments and received the Purple Heart.

He worked his way through College and received a BS Degree in Business Management & Marketing from Franklin University Columbus, Ohio. He was employed with General Electric Company and retired after 40 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 0399 in Dresden, Ohio. His passion was helping and coaching young girls of the Tri Valley Biddy League.

He was a father figure to many and a former member of the Frazeysburg Fire Department. After moving to Boiling Spring Lakes, NC, he was affiliated with the VFW Post 10400 and attended the Full Gospel House of Prayer Church. He loved the outdoors where he loved golfing, hunting, fishing. He loved Nascar racing and loved to drive his Corvette. Terry never met a stranger and loved to tell jokes. His smile and his love for life will live in our hearts forever.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Judith (Judy) Shields Dayton of the home; 3 daughters, Teresa (Sam) Rogers of Pataskala, OH, Julie DePriest of Boiling Springs, NC and Angela Dayton of Gahanna, OH; five grandchildren , Jared and Logan Rogers and Brea, Donnia , and Braedon DePriest. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at 2:00pm at The Full Gospel House of Prayer in Boiling Spring Lakes.

Interment will follow at a later date in Ohio. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to VFW Post 10400, 3161 George II Highway, Southport, NC 28461.

Marjorie was born September 29, 1958, daughter of the late Samuel and Marjorie Gay.

Delight Genevieve Vereen, 81, of Oak Island passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.

Mrs. Vereen was born March 27, 1933, daughter of the late Bill and Ruth Ruark Gay. She was a graduate of New Hanover High School. Mrs. Vereen was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island as well as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Gay.

Survivors include her son, Johnie W. Vereen III and wife Jane of Oak Island; two grandchildren, Chad Suttles, Tammy Marlow; and three great grandchildren, Analeigh, Brandon, and Ricky.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 15, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel with Reverend Charlie Carter and Reverend Gene Tomlinson officiating.
