Walt Elkins died peacefully from complications from cancer on Friday, March 5, 2010, with his family by his side at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.  He was 77.

Walt was born February 18, 1933, in Pikeville, Kentucky to the late Mary and Jim Elkins.  He was the youngest of 13 children.  From humble beginnings, Walt achieved many personal goals.  He owned a successful locksmith service for 30 years in Maryland, where he raised his family.  In 1991, he retired to North Carolina where he enjoyed playing golf and helping his son with his own locksmith business.  Walt became a Catholic later in his life and considered it one of his greatest achievements and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, NC.

Walt recently celebrated his 50th anniversary with his wife, Doreen, his children, grandchildren, and close friends.

He is survived by his wife, Doreen of Oak Island; his sons, Steve Elkins of Southport and Chris Elkins of Wilmington; his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and David Santi of Accokeek, MD; his daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Mike Stephens of Bel Air, MD; his three grandchildren, Kyle Santi, Lauren Santi, and Ryan Stephens, and many special friends.

A viewing will take place Monday, March 8, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Peacock-Newman and White Funeral Home in Southport.  A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are welcome through Catholic Relief Services, c/o the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, 715 Nazareth Street, Raleigh, NC 27606 or to any preferred charitable cause.
