Southport

Michele A. Kelly Thomas, 67, Of Southport, NC, formerly New Jersey, passed away on February 28, 2010 after a long illness.

Michele was born in Bronxville, NY. She flew for Eastern Airlines for a few years, then attended Westchester Community College and Fairleigh-Dickinson University, receiving a nursing degree. She worked in New York City for 18 years before retiring in 1985. Michele was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the County Chairperson for the Republican Committee of Morris County in the early 1970’s and a Lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. To the extent of her life, she was an avid supporter of Historic Preservation and the British Heritage Trust.

Michele had a zest for life and had an unremitting drive for an adventure. She tried and succeeded at many things, including water skiing, tennis, sailing, golf and parachuting. But Michele’s biggest passion , besides her family, was travel. Visiting friends, family and battlefields, in both Europe and the U.S., held equal importance to her. When she wasn’t traveling, Michele was home pursuing her alternate passion, opening her home to loved ones. Whether it was in Rumson, NJ, Cape May, NJ or Southport, NC, you could always count on a warm welcome, great food and great company. A void has been left, for all that knew her, that will never be filled.

Michele was predeceased by her parents, Michael J. Kelly, Sr. and V. Hazel Johnson Kelly, her husband of 26 years, the Honorable Peter W. Thomas, and her beloved sister-in-law, Donna L. Kelly. She is survived by her daughter, Candy (Mark) Rehfuss, her son, Skip (Mary) Maupai, a step-son Bill (Lucy) Thomas and her grandchildren, Jillian and C.J. Rehfuss, and Samantha Thomas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Historic Preservation Trust @ www.preservationnation.org or the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association @ www.catfishchapter.org.

Aunt Mic will be missed by so many. Her knowledge, logic, humor and stories were the best. So many learned so much about life lessons from her and we will all cherish those words of wisdom.
